Veteran all-rounder Sophie Devine revealed a month before the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 that she would be stepping down as T20I captain following the competition. She promised to play on, but according to a number of media sources, the New Zealand international might finally declare her retirement, especially from Twenty20 internationals following the massive competition in the United Arab Emirates.
Ahead of the White Ferns’ opening match against India, Devine addressed the rumours, saying that while she has no intention of retiring, she does want more new players to be included to the squad. The 35-year-old said that she took some time to think back on her career and was appreciative of the opportunity after announcing her resignation as T20I captain. The cricketer, who was born in Wellington, is pleased to watch the development of women’s cricket over the past few years, but she also points out that winning the T20 World Cup is the immediate objective.
Well, look, everyone’s goal here is definitely to win this World Cup, isn’t that right? And for me, it’s the same. It would be an honour to raise the Cup alongside this group of players. And to be honest, it has been a little strange. I’m not retiring or anything like that. Simply said, I’m resigning as the T20 captain. However, it has undoubtedly caused me to consider my career and the possibilities I’ve had,”
Sophie Devine stated at the news conference held prior to the game.
“Looking back to the first one, 2009, which maybe demonstrates my advancing years, but I’m really happy of the development of the women’s game and feel fortunate to have been a part of it. However, I think it’s really great that my attention and energy are currently on this competition, and this is definitely where the kids help. After this, I’m sure I’ll be able to look back and cherish what happened, but right now, this tournament and—more importantly—our game tomorrow are my main priorities, Devine continued.
