On Tuesday, November 26, the first Test match between Bangladesh and the West Indies ended with just seven overs bowled at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua. In the Test, the hosts needed only three wickets to win, while Bangladesh fell 225 runs short of their goal.
On Day 5, the first breakthrough for the West Indies came when Alzarri Joseph got rid of Hasan Mahmud for a 12-ball duck in the second over. The right-arm pacer made Mahmud play at the ball by pitching it on a length around the off-stump. Joshua Da Silva, the wicketkeeper, caught the Bangladeshi bowler’s lone outside edge.
In the 37th over, Jaker Ali was out LBW to Alzarri after attempting to postpone the inevitable. The tall pacer kept the delivery a little low and pitched it around middle this time before banging the batsman on the pads. When Jaker went to review it, it came back with three reds. 31 off 58 balls marked the finish of the right-handed batter’s innings.
As he came out to the crease, Bangladesh’s No. 11 batsman Shoriful Islam was struck in the shoulder by Alzarri’s opening delivery. Jayden Seales bowled the next over, and the physio came out to see how Shoriful was feeling. Bangladesh made the decision to finish their innings with a score of 132/9. With a 201-run victory, the West Indies took a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series.
In the fourth innings, Seales and Kemar Roach each took three wickets. Shamar Joseph contributed with the dismissal of Litton Das on the penultimate day, while Alzarri took two wickets on Day 5. Justin Greaves was named Player of the Match after scoring his first international century in the opening innings.
