As the first Black Caps batter to reach 9,000 runs in the longest format, veteran New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson set records. Williamson accomplished the feat on the third day of the first Test match of the series between England (ENG) and New Zealand (NZ) at Christchurch’s Hagley Oval.
By touching the milestone, Williamson also became the third-fastest batter to reach the milestone. Steve Smith of Australia was the first batter to reach the milestone in the quickest time, followed by Brian Lara, the renowned West Indian. In addition, Kane Williamson, Younis Khan, and former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara tied for third place in terms of speed after 103 games. Remarkably, Smith accomplished the goal in 99 Test matches, whereas Lara needed 101 games to reach 9,000 runs in the Test format.
The Christchurch Test match began with Kane Williamson displaying signs of class. The seasoned batter came out to bat in the first inning and scored 93 runs in 197 deliveries. Despite not hitting the three-figure mark, he demonstrated his domination throughout the opening innings.
Another New Zealand collapse occurs in the second innings after Kane Williamson wicket.
Interestingly, Kane Williamson contributed to New Zealand scoring 348 runs in the game’s opening innings. Furthermore, Kane Williamson once again stepped out to bat and put on a fantastic display after the Black Caps lost to England by 499 runs in the first innings.
Williamson, who came out to bat after the first wicket fell, scored 61 runs in 86 deliveries. Despite losing six wickets, New Zealand had amassed 155 runs by the time of stumps on day three. Daryl Mitchell and Nathan Smith were on the crease at the end of Day 3 with 31* and 1* runs, respectively. With four runs ahead and with four wickets remaining, the Black Caps will be hoping for a strong knock from Mitchell to set a reasonable total that England can chase and stay in the match.
