Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, is being scrutinised for his poor Test results. In three games versus New Zealand, the right-handed hitter only managed 91 runs at an average of 15.16. Although it was anticipated that he would score runs in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the India opener’s bad form appears to have persisted with him, as his struggles have become the talk of the town.
He has only managed to score 31 runs at an average of 28.8 in five innings of the current series. In addition, the squad has only won one of the last six Test matches he has captained, raising doubts about his leadership. Following the Sydney Test, there were whispers that the 37-year-old may declare his retirement from Test cricket. The rumours were triggered by Rohit’s December 31 Instagram post, in which he reflected on the year that had past and titled it, “Thank You 2024.”

India is desperate to win the next Sydney Test, which is set to start on January 3 at the Sydney Cricket Ground, under Rohit’s leadership. The home team now leads the series 2-1 after losing to Australia in Melbourne, and for the first time in a decade, India has lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Furthermore, losing the fifth Test in Sydney would also put their chances of reaching the World Test Championship 2025 finals in peril.
We no longer have control over our destiny. This is not where we can win the series. If we win (the final Test), we will still have hope. We must win this series. If the last game ends in a draw, Australia will need to defeat Sri Lanka in at least one of their games,” Chopra stated on his YouTube channel.
