‘Have been limited by my shoulder’- Jhye Richardson pulls out of BBL 2024-25 to undergo surgery

In the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL 2024-25), the Perth Scorchers have only triumphed three times in eight games. The squad is still in the running to advance to the knockout stages, though, as they have managed to maintain a positive Net Run Rate of +0.467. They will be unable to use their main pacer, Jhye Richardson, during this crucial stage of their campaign.

In order to be ready for the forthcoming Ashes 2025–2026, the right-arm bowler will have another shoulder operation. Since he originally dislocated his right shoulder after fielding in an ODI in March 2019, the 28-year-old has been battling the issue.

He had a second surgery in 2020, but since then, he has experienced several dislocations. His celebration of a wicket during his Sheffield Shield comeback in November was one of the odd ways he dislocated his shoulder. This meant that after the problem continued, he stopped giving the other high fives.

In order to increase stability and lower my chance of further injury, I’ve decided to have shoulder surgery after giving it much thought and consulting with my medical team. I have been constrained by my shoulder in the field for the past several years, so I understand how crucial it is to be able to support my teammates’, Richardson added.

Jhye Richardson, meanwhile, gave some thought to his choice to skip Australia’s top T20 cricket event. The bowler stated that his current goal is to return to cricket in the future in a more robust and healthy manner. In addition, he outlined his strategy for likely making a comeback in the upcoming Sheffield Shield.

This is the best course of action to position myself for a robust and healthy return to cricket, even though it’s a difficult decision, particularly as it means I won’t be able to continue the season with the Scorchers. For me to have the greatest build-up possible, including Shield cricket into next season, the timing of the surgery is essential. Richardson said, “I’ll be putting everything I’ve got into the rehab process, committed to come back as the best version of myself.
