In the 14th Big Bash League, the Hobart Hurricanes won their first championship by a commanding seven-wicket lead with 35 deliveries remaining. The fact that the Hurricanes accomplished the same feat in front of their own fans at the Bellerive Oval added to the victory’s sweetness.
The hosts, who had chosen to field first, were in a difficult position as the Sydney Thunder quickly reached 58 without losing any wickets during the powerplay. The openers had taken up their positions at the crease at the halfway point, and they had already arrived. Nevertheless, Nathan Ellis’s subsequent double-wicket over helped the hosts recover. Riley Meredith finished with three wickets, along with the captain, and the Thunder reached 182/7 thanks to a 67-run effort from opening batsman Jason Sangha.
Mitchell Owen, who was already above his half-century at the end of the batting powerplay, scored a scorching start to help the Hurricanes respond. Curiously, up until that point, his partner at the other end had only encountered nine deliveries in total. Owen sped to an amazing 39-ball tonne despite Jason’s younger brother Tanveer Sangha taking two wickets in an over. The Hurricanes had already overrun the target in 14.1 overs, but the centurion was out a short while after.
With his outworldly knock, the 23-year-old earned the Player of the Match title. Interestingly, the Thunder were not awarded their second BBL championship.
