After winning their first-ever Big Bash League (BBL) championship, the Hobart Hurricanes made a daring acquisition by signing all-rounder Beau Webster from Australia for a three-year contract. After eight years with both Melbourne-based teams, the 31-year-old Tasmanian native is back with his home team.
After making five appearances with the Hurricanes in the 2016–17 season, Webster went on to play for the Melbourne Renegades and subsequently the Melbourne Stars. He was nevertheless a vital component of Tasmania’s domestic system despite his lengthy stay in Victoria.
At the Blundstone Arena, Beau Webster said he was thrilled to be back with the Hurricanes and perform for his home audience.
“I can’t wait to make my BBL comeback to Hobart next summer and play in front of our supporters, my friends, and my family at a full Ninja Stadium. In a statement, Webster stated, “The team is playing a really good brand of cricket under Vaughany [Jeff Vaughan] and Nelly [Nathan Ellis], and seeing them win a championship makes me hungry to bring another one to ‘Canes fans next season.”
In recent seasons, the all-rounder’s T20 strike rate has stayed below 132, despite his steady performance in first-class cricket. Yet he is a dependable bowling option and has amassed 1,577 runs in 70 BBL innings. It’s interesting to note that the last three seasons have seen him take 17 of his 19 BBL wickets.
His job at the Hurricanes will also heavily rely on his leadership: Salliann Beams
The Hurricanes’ roster already includes all-around players like Chris Jordan and Mitchell Owen. Nonetheless, general manager Salliann Beams has faith in Webster’s capacity to change things.
Beau’s return to the Hurricanes will be a source of pride for all Tasmanians, as we have witnessed over the last 18 months what a unique talent he is. In the short form of the game, Beau’s skill set is among the greatest in the nation. He can take the opposition out of the game with the bat and provide them another option to take wickets with the ball.
Beams stated, “He is a great friend to the players we already have on our list, so he will fit in seamlessly with what we are trying to build. His leadership will also be a crucial part of his role at the Hurricanes.”
In addition, Tim David, an all-round player who was crucial to the Hurricanes’ championship run, has not yet been re-signed. The Melbourne Stars are among the teams interested in signing David as a free agent. Liam Hatcher, a fast bowler, has joined the Stars on a two-year contract, strengthening their team.
