In the first ODI of the three-match series at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur, England got off to a fast start after winning the toss and choosing to bat first. Phil Salt and Ben Duckett were among the first to get off the ground. After scoring eight runs off of fifteen deliveries, Salt wreaked havoc in the game’s sixth over.
In his third over, Harshit Rana, one of India’s two newcomers to the ODI outfit that day, was hammered for 26 runs. To his credit, he recovered quite well, dismissing both Duckett and Harry Brook after they were caught in the same over. Salt was furious when he was dismissed due to a disastrous miscommunication between the openers in the over before Harshit’s comeback.
The England reconstruction was started by Joe Root and Jos Buttler following the rush of wickets that fell just before the batting powerplay was over. The two were getting along smoothly until Ravindra Jadeja beat him with a 100 kph slider. Buttler reached his first half-century against the Men in Blue in the one-day format after playing 17 games.
In the 42nd over of the innings, Jacob Bethell held his own and reached his own fifty, but Buttler and Liam Livingstone left quickly after. Jadeja trapped him in front of her shortly after. What England could post on the board in the remaining overs was the key consideration from that point on. In the current white-ball series, India had to chase down 249 after England finished on 248 to secure their sixth victory.
“I had a dream. I worked hard and readied myself for this situation. I didn’t hit the proper lengths at first, but as I fixed them, I was rewarded. Because they wanted to give the hitters some space, I continued to bowl on the stumps. The pitch is a little bit off-tempo. Some are pausing a little, while others are coming on beautifully. We recovered gracefully. “We can chase this down,” said newcomer Rana, who took three wickets, in between innings. “It’s a good total.”
