Three days remain till the WPL 2025, and the five teams are getting ready to play well. The third iteration of the franchise league will include some of the top women’s cricket players.
The Delhi Capitals Women (DC-W) are one of the teams to keep an eye on. They have advanced to the finals twice but have not won the trophy, losing to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women (RCB-W) the first time and the Mumbai Indians Women (MI-W) the second time. The team is renowned for nurturing up-and-coming talent, and a net bowler named Ahilya Chandel, 22, recently joined the team.
While practicing with the team, Ahilya Chandel talked candidly about her cricketing journey.
I have played cricket for Japan thus far in my career, and I used to play cricket in Sydney, Australia. Since the age of eight, I have been playing. It was my father who introduced me to cricket. My father instilled in me the fact that he is Indian. He thought, “Why not give it a try?” after learning that Japan had a cricket team. And yes, I’ve made my debut and played for Japan till 2022, and now I’m here,” Chandel stated in a Delhi Capitals interview.

Also, Chandel discussed her experiences with the DC-W players, particularly with Indian batting sensation Jemimah Rodrigues, who she claimed encouraged her during practice sessions and said it was a great chance for her to bowl to the best cricketers in the world.
It’s true that I spoke with Jemi. Since I’m here as a net bowler, I talked to her about my bowling and she was very encouraging and reassuring about my abilities, which was really good. Playing with top-tier cricket players is a great experience. It’s also a terrific experience for me to grow as a person and realise how far I’ve come or how much I’ve fallen behind them. Chandel continued, “I try to keep a step ahead of them and consider their mindset when I’m bowling to elite cricket players.”
Chandel’s prior performances include playing 32 games for the Japan Women, taking 30 wickets at an average of 17.06, and with an economy of 4.58, with her best numbers coming against China Women last season (4/8).
