Kane Williamson, the former captain of New Zealand, has agreed to a two-year deal with Middlesex, which will start in the English summer of 2025. After previous stints with Gloucestershire (2011–12) and Yorkshire (2013–18), the celebrated hitter will play for the London-based club in both the County Championship and T20 Blast. This will be his third stint in county cricket.
Williamson will participate in a minimum of five County Championship games in the later stages of the competition and at least ten of the fourteen T20 Blast group-stage matches. From May until September of this year, Lord’s will serve as his new home as he also plays for London Spirit in The Hundred.
Middlesex, who were third in Division Two of the County Championship in 2024, will be hoping for a strong showing, and the Kiwi’s performance should help them. However, the squad had a difficult time in the Vitality Blast, placing eighth out of nine South Group teams.
Kane Williamson expressed his pleasure over the change, pointing out the club’s lengthy history and his joy at returning to county cricket after a few of years away.
“This opportunity with Middlesex was a really exciting idea since I’ve played a little county cricket in the past, but not in a number of years. I’m incredibly excited to play for a prestigious club with such a long history. For many reasons, Lord’s is one of my favorite grounds in the world, so having the opportunity to spend the summer there is unique,” Williamson said.
Alan Coleman, the director of Middlesex Cricket, described the signing as a huge move and said he expects the world-class batsman to make a significant influence.
“Kane’s arrival to Middlesex this summer has us giddy. It’s a true coup to land one of the best players in the game, and we’re excited to watch him walk out at Lord’s with the three Seaxes on his chest,” Coleman remarked.
