The Australian captain, Pat Cummins, has been sidelined from the Champions Trophy 2025 and is currently out of the team owing to injury. Following his recent historic 3-1 series victory over India in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, which ended India’s ten-year dominance, he did not make an appearance.
The rivalry between Australia and India has always been a hot topic among fans, with many Indian viewers drawing comparisons to the classic Ashes series. Some have even gone so far as to say that the BGT matches are more intense than the Ashes matches.
In an interview with SEN radio, Pat Cummins discussed his thoughts on the significance of the BGT victory.
It was a fantastic summer that I will remember for a long time. While we have been fairly dominating at home against England, India has won the last two series here in terms of competitiveness,” he remarked.
The Australian captain acknowledged that there was a lot of excitement surrounding the match, saying, “This summer did feel like it was the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked Test sides battling each other.” It did feel larger than usual from that perspective.
He did point out that there is still a lot of pressure on Australian players in particular when it comes to the Ashes.
“You feel as though the world is ending when you lose an Ashes at home. In that regard, it remains larger,” Cummins said.
Australia had a strong start to their Champions Trophy campaign, defeating England handily despite his lackluster performance. India, meanwhile, has been winning back-to-back games and has been in excellent form.
Sachin Tendulkar has been the highest-scoring player in BGT since 1996 with 3,262 runs in 65 innings, and Nathan Lyon has the most wickets (125 from 54 innings). With 10 series victories in 17 rounds, India leads the standings in head-to-head records. Australia has won six times, with one series ending in a draw.
