The first ODI of the Sri Lanka Women’s tour of New Zealand took place at McLean Park in Napier on March 4. Unfortunately, just 36.4 overs were bowled before the match was canceled due to the constant rain. A poor beginning to a series that was supposed to include some interesting and youthful players.
After winning the toss, the New Zealand women’s team decided to field against the Sri Lankan women’s team. Early in the innings, the hosts, under the leadership of interim captain Suzie Bates, were having success with the ball, dismissing half the team. Bree Illing was the Kiwis’ best bowler, finishing with statistics of 2/42 in her ten overs. With the Sri Lanka Women’s score at 147/5 after 36.4 overs, the game was canceled.
Harshitha Madavi Samarawickrama, a young left-handed batswoman who attempted to keep the innings together with her undefeated performance of 66 off 96 deliveries, was the only Sri Lanka Women’s batter who looked excellent that day. Seven boundaries were hit during Harshita’s innings as she attempted to form middle-field partnerships. Unfortunately, the weather gods ultimately cut short her time at the crease.
For the remaining ODIs, the caravan travels to Nelson.
Both teams will need to win the final two ODI matches in order to win the series. Sri Lanka and New Zealand won’t want to accept a draw in this ODI series because they haven’t been playing well in this format.
The Saxton Oval in Nelson will host the second ODI on Friday, March 7, and the final one on March 9. It is possible that the two teams will engage in a fierce struggle.
