India defeated New Zealand in a thrilling final on Sunday, March 9, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, to win the 2025 Champions Trophy for the first time since 2013.
Rachin Ravindra batted strongly during the opening powerplay, giving New Zealand a thrilling start after choosing to bat first. In the eighth over, Varun Chakaravarthy removed Will Young, which allowed the Men in Blue to score runs at will. The Kiwis fell to 75/3 in the 13th over after Kuldeep Yadav removed Rachin and Kane Williamson in quick succession.
Tom Latham and Daryl Mitchell attempted to calm things down, but Ravindra Jadeja sent the wicketkeeper-batter packing in the 24th over, ending the calm 33-run partnership. When Glenn Phillips attempted to form a partnership with Mitchell, he played an unusual knock. Off 87 balls, they scored 57 more runs to take the fifth wicket.
Chakaravarthy fired Phillips for thirty-four. However, Mitchell scored a significant half-century while batting conservatively. With a score of 251/7 in their 50 overs, New Zealand finished strongly thanks to Michael Bracewell.
During the powerplay, Rohit Sharma attacked the Kiwi bowlers and seized the bull by the horns. Shubman Gill dropped anchor, a wonderful compliment to his captain. After they scored 105 runs in the first 19 overs, it appeared as though India would win the match handily.
Nevertheless, New Zealand quickly took three wickets, using their spinners to control the run flow. Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer contributed 61 runs for the fourth wicket to calm things down. But both batsmen were quickly removed because India needed KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya to step up. With unrestricted batting, they scored 38 runs off of 36 balls. With just 11 runs needed to win, India dismissed the former.
A boundary behind square leg was hit by Ravindra Jadeja to end the match. With an over remaining and four wickets taken, India easily won.
