The Men in Blue won their third ICC Champions Trophy on March 9, 2025, making it a landmark day in Indian cricket history. In addition to marking India’s eagerly anticipated comeback to ICC glory in the 50-over format, this victory also saw veteran bowler Mohammed Shami take home an ICC trophy for the first time.
There had been discussions regarding Shami’s absence of an ICC title prior to the competition. Even if his campaign was mixed, the seasoned pacer ultimately put those discussions to rest. He had a fantastic start to the competition, taking a fifer against Bangladesh, but he struggled in the last match, letting up 74 runs with only one wicket remaining. Nevertheless, his involvement throughout the event was essential to India’s triumph.
In the middle of his on-field exploits, Shami was also in the heart of a controversy shortly before the final. Several religious leaders criticized the fast bowler for not adhering to “Roza,” or fasting during Ramadan, after he chose to drink an energy drink during the competition. On social media, opinions were formed by the discussion surrounding Shami’s decision, with some people casting doubt on his religious beliefs.
However, Mohammed Shami recognized during the post-match festivities with a little but impactful gesture.
Players quickly popped bottles of champagne in celebration as the Indian team climbed the stage to celebrate their victory. Nevertheless, Shami discreetly moved aside, abstaining from the champagne shower in accordance with his religious convictions. He was praised and applauded for his beautiful act as he joined his teammates after the celebration was over.

Virat Kohli’s post-match greeting of Shami’s mother added to the poignant moments. Before snapping selfies with her, Kohli made a touching sign of respect by touching her feet.
With this victory, India demonstrated their supremacy on the global scene and not only broke their New Zealand curse but also silenced critics.
