In India, cricket has become one of the most popular sports. To the extent that it has nearly become ingrained in the contemporary national culture, women’s participation in the game has grown rapidly as a result. With the launch of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), which just finished its third season and has been garnering a lot of interest from cricket enthusiasts, BCCI has helped female cricket flourish.
Of course, there has been a change in the way that women’s cricket participation is perceived, and many people have been very loud about it. Star cricketer Virat Kohli recently shared his thoughts on the lack of recognition accorded to players of the opposite gender. During an event in Bengaluru, Virat Kohli went on to say that while things are making progress, more support is needed to advance.
“They served as catalysts for themselves and somehow brought attention to themselves. Over the course of six or seven years, I witnessed it firsthand. They began playing in a style that demonstrated their belief, and people soon began doing it frequently. As Kohli said at the RCB Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit, “it finally reached a point where, you know, the commercials got better, money was being infused into the women’s game, and then you have the WPL.”
The culture of sports encompasses all: Virat Kohli
It must be a team effort to look at males for the improvement of sport in any nation. Women’s sports, including cricket and all the others, are a huge component of sports culture, which encompasses everyone. We have a ton of data on women’s sports. In tennis, badminton, wrestling, and boxing, we are developing individual activities throughout the year. Therefore, I believe it’s moving in the correct route, but it still requires more support and the development of ever-more infrastructure,” the star batter continued.
Speaking of Kohli, his focus will be on the forthcoming IPL, which starts on March 22. The forthcoming competition will be his 18th appearance for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and he is still vying for his first championship. In the tournament opener, RCB will play the Kolkata Knight Riders, the reigning champions.
