Yashasvi Jaiswal has been playing exceptionally well lately. In white-ball cricket, he hasn’t had many opportunities for India, despite making a significant impact in Test matches. Nonetheless, he has taken advantage of every chance that has presented itself.
In 23 Twenty20 Internationals since his debut in 2023, the 23-year-old has amassed 723 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 164.31. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma opened every match in the T20 World Cup 2024, hence he did not play a single game.
But because both have stepped away from the format, Yashasvi Jaiswal has a strong chance of securing a spot.
But Jaiswal’s boyhood coach, Jwala Singh, thinks Jaiswal might make it to India’s T20 World Cup 2026 roster if he has a strong season in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
“He has played a lot of T20s for India, with many fifties at a good strike rate, but in the last 2-3 series, he was rested, I can say that,” Singh told PTI in a conversation.
“But yes, I believe this year’s IPL will give him that opportunity [for the T20 World Cup] because there will be a lot of matches and high-pressure games.”
Singh believed that the Indian Premier League has always served as a platform for players to advance to the Indian squad and become legendary figures in the sport. He believes Jaiswal can go in the same direction.
“If you see Indian cricket, IPL is the platform from where we get the season’s big hits because all IPL performances are taken into account, and you get noticed,” remarked the captain.
Because of his 2023 IPL performance, he was chosen, therefore yeah, I do believe this is an opportunity. In my opinion, this is a new beginning, and if he does well and scores some runs, it will be very beneficial for him to rejoin the squad.”
According to Singh, Jaiswal will eventually adjust to opening alongside Jos Buttler, even though he will miss it first. The partnership between Jaiswal and Buttler was essentially terminated when the Gujarat Titans (GT) purchased him for INR 15.75 crore at the IPL 2025 auction.
“I think he will definitely miss Buttler because he used to always call him ‘Jos bhai’ to me on call or whenever he spoke about him,” he explained.
“So yes, when you have played cricket with someone for quite some time in a team as an opener, it will take a little bit of time to get adjusted.”
The IPL 2025 campaign of Jaiswal’s Rajasthan Royals (RR) will kick off on Sunday, March 23, in Hyderabad, against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
