In the second Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 encounter against the Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) took the most of the batting-friendly conditions at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Sunday, March 23. They collected a huge score of 286/6 in their 20 overs.
After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, Riyan Parag, who was leading the Royals for the first time, was put to the test. In IPL 2024, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma carried on where they left off. In the first three overs, the two left-handed batters scored 45 runs. In the fourth over, Maheesh Theekshana made the initial breakthrough by dismissing Abhishek, who scored 24 off 11 balls.
Head formed an 85-run partnership with debutant Ishan Kishan off of just 39 balls. Before being removed by Tushar Deshpande, the latter scored 67 runs off of 31 balls. With Nitish Kumar Reddy by his side, Kishan persisted in battering the Rajasthan bowlers. Parag was left reeling when they put up a 72-run stand off only 29 balls. When Theekshana returned for his last over, he dismissed Reddy, ending the deadly relationship. Despite costing him 52 runs, the Sri Lankan spinner ended his innings with two wickets.
In the latter part of the innings, Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen formed a partnership that launched the Sunrisers’ attack. Jofra Archer gave up 76 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket, making his comeback game for the Royals a terrible one. In the history of the IPL, this proved to be the most costly spell.
Klaasen made an incredible cameo, scoring 34 runs off of 14 balls with five fours and one six. All eyes were on Kishan, who was getting close to his first IPL century, after he was removed by Sandeep Sharma in the 19th over. After hitting consecutive sixes in the penultimate over, the wicketkeeper-batter took a couple to reach his century off just forty-five balls.
The Sunrisers came within one run of matching the record for the highest team total in IPL history, which they achieved the previous year, thanks to two wickets and two boundaries given up by Tushar Deshpande. Kishan hit 11 fours and six sixes to end undefeated at 106 off 47 deliveries.
