The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) vs. Delhi Capitals (DC) match at Chepauk in the IPL 2025 attracted attention not only because it was CSK’s third consecutive loss but also because of a moment of failure by their great finisher, MS Dhoni. After pursuing 184 runs, CSK lost by 25 runs, leaving the home crowd disappointed. But Dhoni’s squandered opportunity for a free hit was criticised by Navjot Singh Sidhu.
CSK lost five wickets for just 74 and were in trouble when DC produced 183/6 and they were chasing 184. Although MS Dhoni (30* off 26) and Vijay Shankar (69* off 54) gave the team optimism, they lost most of the chase. The 14th over, though, was the free hit moment.
MS Dhoni was supposed to take full advantage of the free-hit delivery from Mohit Sharma and smash it for a six.
The 43-year-old, however, was unable to connect with the short-pitch delivery, which led to a dot ball. Navjot Singh Sidhu didn’t mince words when he expressed his opinion about the lost opportunity after this.
“When else would he go if not now? “That turned out to be a blank fire,” Sidhu stated on live. “Le bhaiya, ye toh phush pataka nikla.”

The Delhi-based team, meanwhile, appeared to be in complete control of the match from the beginning. KL Rahul (77), Abishek Porel (33), and the middle-order’s crucial contributions helped the team reach 183 earlier in the batting innings, which was a manageable total.
The only topic of conversation in response was Shankar and Dhoni’s partnership, while the CSK team lost by 25 runs since none of their batsmen stayed at the crease long enough. After winning three straight games, Delhi captain Axar Patel was beaming.
“Winning three straight is fantastic. We aim to make a difference, no matter how tiny. That’s the strategy, and so far it’s worked. I only bowled one over because I was trying to save myself because I hurt my finger! Everything is going well. We’re performing well in the field, but we’re also missing catches, in my opinion as captain. At any minute, the momentum could change,” Patel stated.
