Ian Bishop, who witnessed the incredible knock of Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the IPL 2025 versus GT, recalled his first meeting with Sachin Tendulkar in 1990. In Chesterfield, England, the Derbyshire vs. India match was detailed by the former West Indian pacer.
Tendulkar is a midget batter, according to the former bowler, who also mentioned how difficult it is to bat in the challenging conditions. The Chesterfield pitch, he remembered, was really bouncy. Because of this, Bishop, who is not as tall as Tendulkar, took his time getting ready to bowl. After that, he proceeded to hit a length ball that he thought would be sufficient for the Indian batter. But the Master Blaster didn’t waste any time in slamming him to the ground.
At Chesterfield, I was representing Derbyshire, and we were playing India. Never forget it. We must have made a certain number of runs when we batted first, but I’m not sure. Chesterfield leaps up and down. When you enter, it bounces. “We were in the game, and this little…he was this high (indicating with his hand), and he came into bat, faced a couple of balls, and I thought, okay, we’ve got this sewn up,” Bishop said in an interview with ESPN Cricinfo after the game.
When wickets continued falling from one end towards the end, Bishop thought it was difficult because 236 was the total that India needed to reach. According to Bishop, he realised Tendulkar was not hitting him hard enough. According to the well-known pundit, bowling short was the biggest error he committed. “I was hit into a tree way over the deep midwicket by the legendary batter,” he added.
“Towards the end of the game, the asking rate becomes a little difficult, and this young child is unable to strike me anywhere. “I thought I would talk him up, so I ran up and bowled a little back of a length. He hit me into a tree, way over deep mid-wicket, as far as I’ve ever been hit before,” the former West Indian pacer continued.

To all the guys in their 40s. I never saw Sachin Tendulkar bat in his early 20s. Was he anywhere near as good as Vaibhav Suryavanshi? pic.twitter.com/jBjEbQMnXN

Vaibhav Suryavanshi is even younger: Bishop
The former fast bowler revealed that a 17-year-old Tendulkar had ‘shocked the living daylights out of an Ian Bishop in his pomp.’ Reflecting on Vaibhav’s knock, he claimed that Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, and other pacers must have experienced something similar.
“Sachin Tendulkar, aged 17, shocked the living daylights out of an Ian Bishop in his pomp. This kid here is even younger. He’s 14 years old, taking on world-class bowlers. That must have shocked the living daylights out of Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, and all the rest,” Bishop concluded.
