Gujarat Titans (GT) moved to the top of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, points table on Tuesday, May 6, after defeating Mumbai Indians (MI) by three wickets (DLS method) at the Wankhede Stadium.
After winning the toss, Shubman Gill chose to field first. Ryan Rickelton was sent packing by Mohammed Siraj, who struck off the second ball of the game. MI lost both of their openers for 26 runs when Arshad Khan removed Rohit Sharma in the fourth over. Will Jacks and Suryakumar Yadav took advantage of reprieves later in the game to form an important combination. However, they finished with just 155/8 on the board due to a batting collapse.
In an innings with two rain breaks, the Gujarat Titans required 15 runs off the final over after experiencing their own batting collapse. Rahul Tewatia struck Deepak Chahar for a four, then Gerald Coetzee hit him for a six. MI suffered when the right-arm bowler bowled a no ball as well.
Arshad Khan needed to score one run off the last delivery, thus Coetzee was removed off the penultimate ball. At mid-off, Hardik Pandya wasted a run-out opportunity at the non-striker’s end when the former MI player hammered one to him.
Talking Points
1. Rashid Khan shows signs of returning to form
Rashid Khan bowled a wonderful spell through the middle overs for Gujarat. He kept the dangerous duo of Jacks and Suryakumar quiet. The Afghan stalwart accounted for the wicket of Jacks, who was MI’s top scorer. In his four overs, Rashid conceded just 21 runs and picked up one wicket. During the mid-innings break, he told the commentators that he felt like he was 70-75% of his prime self.
2. Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance brings MI back in the game
Gujarat Titans were cruising at the first rain break, needing just 49 runs off the last six overs with eight wickets in hand. Shubman and Sherfane Rutherford were looking to take GT home after the rain interval. However, Jasprit Bumrah bowled a peach to castle the GT skipper, and this opened the floodgates. The veteran seamer also bagged the wicket of Shahrukh Khan and finished with phenomenal figures of 2/19 in his four overs.
3. Batting collapses for both teams
Interestingly, both MI and GT suffered similar batting collapses. The third wicket partnership for MI yielded 71 runs off 43 balls. However, from 97/2, they slumped to 123/7. Meanwhile, GT were in a comfortable position in their run-chase at 113/2. However, Bumrah and his fellow MI bowlers bowled with a lot of grit and determination to reduce the visitors to 126/6.
Who Said What?
Hardik Pandya, MI (Losing Captain)
I think we fought really well, we kept pushing as a group. I think it wasnt’t a 150 wicket, but we were short by 25 runs. Credit to the bowlers as they kept fighting (throughout the innings.). Dropped catches do bite you, but the catches didn’t bite us much. Really happy with the boys giving their 120 percent in the field and not giving up. The ground wasn’t wet in the first innings, but it was difficult for us as the rain kept coming in (during the second innings.) We had to play the game and we did that.
Shubman Gill, GT (Winning Captain and Player of the Match)
There was a little bit of chaos when we came into bat after the train but always good to have a W on your side. The game plans were different in the powerplay, the atmosphere such that it felt like a Test match. We wanted to take the game on after the powerplay but the rain kept coming. The wicket was a little bit slow, with the rain coming in, the shots were not easy to hit so we thought, when it’s in our zone, we were go for it.
It was frustrating, we were ahead at one stage but we lost 4/20. But, the universe gave us a chance and we took it. When the match goes till the last ball when you chase 150, every contribution becomes important. Wins like these get you through in these big tournaments like IPL. He is coming back from injury, it’s not easy. Thoughts like these can creep in but we need to take every game at is. It’s about coming in and giving your everything when you come into play.
