'Not saying I'm done, not saying I'm coming back' -  MS Dhoni keeps IPL future in suspense

MS Dhoni, the captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has addressed the uncertainty around his future, stating that he will make a decision on his IPL future in a few months. He underlined that there is no need to rush the decision because there are still four to five months to consider and decide. Dhoni’s comments came following CSK’s emphatic 83-run win over Gujarat Titans (GT) on May 25 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The former Indian captain stated that if cricketers retired solely on the basis of their performance, the majority would do so at the age of 22. He stated that he had the luxury of time to decide on his retirement.

“It depends.” Again, I would say the same thing: I have four to five months to decide, and there’s no rush to do what needs to be done,”

MS Dhoni, who will be 44 and just a few months shy of 45 by the next IPL season, said.

“Every year, it takes 15% more effort to keep the body fit; remember, this is top-level cricket. It’s professional cricket; you have to be at your best, and performance isn’t always a factor, because if cricketers start retiring based on performance, a couple of them would retire at the age of 22.

“What matters is how hungry you are, how fit you are, how much you can contribute to the team, and whether or not the team needs you. So I have sufficient time. I’ll return to Ranchi, where I haven’t been in a long time, and enjoy a few bike rides before making a decision.

“I’m not saying I’m finished, and I’m not saying I’m coming back. As previously stated, I have the luxury of time. When you have the luxury, why not consider it and then make a decision.”

The Indian legend expressed worries about the team’s batting lineup, but also observed that it was capable of producing decent totals. Dhoni said that Ruturaj Gaikwad does not need to worry about next season and would naturally fit.

“We didn’t have a very good season, but good to finish on a good note,” Dhoni joked. “I believe this was one of the best performances – from the bowling and batting departments, not to mention the fielding and catching.” I don’t think we’ve caught well all season, but this was one game where it was also good.”

“When we started the season, we played the first four games at home out of six,” Dhoni told the BBC. “We won the tosses, and we decided to bat second because there was a lot of dew, but I thought the wicket would be better if we batted first.”

During the second innings, the batters lost confidence and struggled to recover. I was more concerned about the batting department; at the end of the day, you must score runs. However, based on how everyone is contributing, we appear to be a team capable of scoring runs, and dealing with the bowlers becomes slightly easier.

Yes, we still have a few holes to plug. But one of the most significant things was that when Rutu (Gaikwad) returns next season, we will be able to provide him with a team where he just needs to fit in one spot in the playing XI and not worry about too many other things.”
