Suryakumar Yadav has broken Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs scored by a Mumbai Indians batter in a single IPL season. The right-handed hitter accomplished the feat during a match against the Punjab Kings at Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
Tendulkar set a 15-year record with 618 runs in the 2010 season. That same year, he also won the Orange Cap. Suryakumar Yadav did, however, surpass the figure in 2025. He came close in 2023 with 605 runs, but this time, SKY finished the league stage with 640 runs and has the opportunity to score more runs with the team ready to participate in the playoffs. With that, he became the first Mumbai Indians player to score over 600 runs in multiple IPL seasons.
Most runs for Mumbai Indians in an IPL season
| Player | Runs | Year |
| Suryakumar Yadav | 640* | 2025 |
| Sachin Tendulkar | 618 | 2010 |
| Suryakumar Yadav | 605 | 2023 |
| Sachin Tendulkar | 553 | 2011 |
Notably, in the same innings, he became the hitter with the most straight 25-plus innings (14) in T20s. He outperformed South Africa’s Temba Bavuma, who had 13 such scores in the 2019-2020 season.
The 34-year-old’s record-breaking innings came in a critical match against Punjab Kings, with MI aiming for a top-two finish. Coming in at No. 3, he anchored the innings beautifully, scoring 57 off 38 balls to help MI reach 184/7 in their allotted 20 overs.
Suryakumar is now third on the season’s overall run-scorers list, having scored 640* runs in IPL 2025.
“The wicket was a little tough. We practiced here yesterday night, but the pacers found it too sticky. Against spinners, it was fine. We went 10-15 runs short, but we expect to defend this. A little tempo off and seam-up should suffice; it’s a solid fighting total. Sweeps and flicks are my favourite shots from the inns, but batting to the end was critical,” Yadav said on radio following his record-breaking performance.
