Former India fast bowler Yograj Singh believes Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could have kept playing Test cricket for another five years. Rohit declared his retirement from Test cricket on May 7, and Kohli followed suit on May 12.
After the two renowned cricketers bid farewell to the sport’s longest format, Shubman Gill was named captain of the team. The 25-year-old became India’s fifth-youngest Test captain, and he will begin his term during the tough five-match series against England, which begins on Friday, June 20.
Yograj believed that Rohit Sharma and Kohli should have waited for the baton to be given to Shubman.
The father of renowned India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also claimed that he advised Rohit to get up at 5 a.m. and run 20 miles to stay healthy.
“Virat and Rohit should not have retired from Tests. I instructed Rohit to wake up at 5 a.m. and run 20 kilometres to keep himself fit. Virat and Rohit can continue to play Test cricket for another five years. They should have played. They should be present to ensure that the baton is passed to the youth. Yograj told Insidesport that the baton had not been transferred, but rather tossed to Gill.
Yograj Singh has a great India Captain wish for Yuvraj Singh.
Furthermore, Yograj Singh stated that he attempted to persuade his son not to retire from international cricket in 2019, pledging to assist him in becoming India’s captain.
“Even when Yuvraj was retiring, I promised him that I will help him become India captain and that we will throw everybody out, but he quit,” Yograj told the press.
Meanwhile, an inexperienced Indian squad prepares to play England in a five-match Test series. The first Test begins at Headingley, Leeds. While Shubman was selected India’s 37th Test captain, flashy wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was appointed as his deputy. They will need to collaborate and mentor the young people around them in order to reach their full potential in the United Kingdom.
