Karun Nair, an Indian hitter who is set to make his long-awaited return to Test cricket after nearly eight years, suffered a slight injury scare during practice on Wednesday in Headingley, Leeds. The event occurred barely two days before the first Test of India’s five-match series against England, which also marked the start of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle for both teams.
Karun Nair, who was set to make his first Test appearance since 2017, was struck in the ribs by a sharp ball from bowler Prasidh Krishna during practice.
The blow caused the 33-year-old distress, but he quickly resumed batting. Later, following his batting session, he showed the support staff and team mates where the ball had struck him.
The right-hand batsman, who was once seen as a potential star after becoming only the second Indian to record a Test triple-century, was left out of the squad despite his outstanding performances. However, a strong domestic season in 2024-25, including a recent double century in the India A vs England Lions series and a key role in Vidarbha’s Ranji Trophy victory, won him a call up to the national team.
England announce playing XI for first Test
Despite the minor injury, Nair’s performance in the nets did raise concerns. He struggled initially against Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, appearing hesitant against deliveries outside the off stump. His troubles continued against spin, with Ravindra Jadeja clean bowling him once. Nair also had a brief chat with batting coach Shitanshu Kotak and made technical adjustments.
The Indian team, under new captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Rishabh Pant, arrived in Leeds a few days before the opening Test. Notably, this is the first time since 2011 that the side will be without Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, who recently rejoined the squad after attending a family emergency, will be guiding India to seek a strong start to their WTC campaign in challenging English conditions.
England, on the other hand, announced their playing XI on Wednesday. Chris Woakes, who is included in the mix, is returning from injury, replacing Sam Cook. Vice-captain Ollie Pope has retained his No. 3 spot ahead of Jacob Bethell, while Jamie Smith continues as the specialist wicketkeeper.
