Ben Stokes, England’s red-ball skipper, cited his team’s ability to clear up India’s tailenders as one of the key reasons for their five-wicket victory at Headingley in the opening Test of the series. The hosts won comfortably by five wickets.
Stokes praised both teams for playing “quality cricket,” but he was particularly delighted with his team’s approach and dedication.
“We focused on our mindset and devotion on a daily basis. Both teams played excellent cricket, which was a terrific way to begin the series. The wicket was excellent for batting. During the post-match press conference, Stokes said, “The way we knocked over the Indian tail was a big reason why we were able to chase down this score.”
Ben Stokes emphasises the necessity of cool approach in high-pressure chase.
Stokes also offered light on the batters’ thoughts leading up to and during the 371-run chase in the fourth innings.
“When you’re chasing down totals like that, retaining the easygoing mood as much as possible is critical to the psyche of someone who is out there in the centre with the strain of the scenario. Everyone goes out there with a clear understanding of what we’re attempting to accomplish. [Our objective] was really straightforward: if we bat the remaining overs in the game, we would win,” Stokes said.
England made history by chasing down 371 runs at Headingley. It was the second-most successful chase at the venue during Tests. It was also England’s third-highest successful Test chase, as well as The Three Lions’ second-highest success in the longest format.
Speaking about Ben Stokes‘ performance, he ended up with figures of 4/66 in 20 overs and 1/47 in 15 overs. With the bat, he scored 20 (52) and 33 (51) in his side’s first and second innings, respectively. It was a complete all-round outing for the seasoned campaigner.
