The hosts West Indies’ World Test Championship (WTC 2025-27) cycle got off to a great start at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, with bowler Shamar Joseph bowling an excellent opening stint against Australia on Day 1 of the first Test. Joseph dismissed Sam Konstas and Cameron Green in his first eight overs, providing key breakthroughs for the hosts.
Coming into this Test series, Australia was hoping to rebound from a poor end to their previous World Test Championship cycle, which saw them lose in the final to South Africa. With Steven Smith out due to injury and Marnus Labuschagne dropped, the Australians decided for a new top order. Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bat first, seeking to score runs.
“We’ll get a bat first. This looks like a solid wicket. Away series are always tricky. Pretty much the same as a few weeks ago. Smithy will be missed. “His catching as well,” Cummins stated during the toss.
Joseph took the first wicket in the fourth over. He hit a spectacular in-swinger that trapped Konstas in front. Initially given not out, the West Indies reviewed, and ball tracking revealed it was hitting the leg stump, dismissing the opener for only three. His second wicket was in the tenth over. Joseph found the outside edge of Green’s bat, resulting in a low catch by Justin Greaves at second slip. Jayden Seales quickly picked up his first wicket of the day, dismissing Josh Inglis with a short ball.

Khawaja and Head steady Australia’s innings
Meanwhile, despite the top-order collapse, Usman Khawaja held one end and was well supported by Travis Head. At the time of writing, the visitors’ scorecard read 94/3 after the end of 33 overs. With Beau Webster, Alex Carey, and skipper Cummins still to come in, the Aussies have the required batting depth. However, they would bank on the pair of Khawaja and Head to guide them to a strong position.
