Shubman Gill, India’s youthful Test captain, made history by becoming only the second Indian and ninth overall to score two centuries in the same Test match. The 25-year-old accomplished this unusual accomplishment during the second Test against England at Edgbaston.
Gill, who had already scored his highest Test score of 269 in the first innings, followed up with a century in the second innings. With this, he beat Sunil Gavaskar’s record 344 runs against the West Indies in 1971, scoring 369* runs in a single match. He had three hundreds in four innings during his first series as captain.
Shubman Gill enters an elite group of only nine batters in Test history who have scored a double hundred and a tonne in the same match.
He is only the second Indian to achieve so, following Gavaskar. He is also the second captain to do so in England, following Graham Gooch’s memorable performance against India at Lord’s in 1990.
He has been part in three 100-plus stands in this Test alone, a feat only a handful Indian hitters, including Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar, have done in away Tests before. On Day 4, Gill teamed up with Rishabh Pant (55), and the two added 110 off 103 balls. Later, the right-hander and Ravindra Jadeja combined for a 68-run stand as India’s advantage surpassed 480. His second-innings century came off 129 balls and contained nine fours and three sixes.
