The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has announced with sadness the death of renowned Afghan and international cricket umpire Bismillah Jan Shinwari, who died at the age of 41 after a lengthy illness.
Shinwari, a well-known character in Afghan cricket circles, appeared in 34 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 26 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) throughout his international career. He has officiated in 51 List A, 31 First-Class, and 96 domestic T20 matches, gaining praise for his commitment and professionalism on the pitch.
ACB’s leadership, staff, and the entire AfghanAtalan family are startled and grieved by the death of Bismillah Jan Shinwari (1984-2025), a respected member of Afghanistan’s elite umpiring panel.
“We pray that the Almighty Allah (SWT) grants him the highest ranks in Jannah and gives patience and strength to his loved ones during this difficult time,” the members said.
Shinwari, a well-known character in Afghan cricket circles, appeared in 34 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 26 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) throughout his international career.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) also expressed condolences over Shinwari’s loss.
His most recent international appearance came at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 in Al Amerat, Oman, in February of this year. Jay Shah, Chairman of the International Cricket Council, expressed his sympathies to Shinwari’s family and loved ones on his tragic death.
“Bismillah was a well-known umpire, admired by players, peers, and officials alike. He was a mainstay on the international cricket circuit, with a lengthy future ahead of him. His contributions to the game were significant, and he will be sorely missed by the cricket community. We are deeply grieved by this death and send our heartfelt sympathies to his family and loved ones,” Shah stated.
Bismillah Jan Shinwari leaves behind a legacy of service and excellence in Afghan cricket. He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew and worked with him.
