Devon Conway, who was left out of New Zealand’s T20I squad for the tri-series against Zimbabwe and South Africa, has been called up to replace the injured Finn Allen. Allen sustained a foot injury while competing for the San Francisco Unicorns in the 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) season.
Conway has not played a T20I in over a year, but he has remained active in franchise cricket. He most recently shone for the Texas Super Kings in the MLC, hitting 135 runs in four matches with a strike rate of 127.35.
“We’re devastated for Finn.” I was excited to work with him and see him maintain his form from the MLC, but sadly, injuries happen.
“We are fortunate to have someone of Devon Conway calibre to replace Finn,” stated New Zealand head coach Rob Walter.
Batters Mitchell Hay and Tim Robinson have joined the squad, as has allrounder James Neesham. The trio will provide additional coverage for Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips, and Rachin Ravindra, all of whom are scheduled to appear in the MLC final on Sunday.
“We knew there’d be a possibility that a handful of players could be involved in the MLC final, so we’re bringing in Mitch, Jimmy and Tim as possible replacements,” Walter told me.
The Kiwis will be headed by all-rounder Mitchell Santner as Walter begins his career as head coach, with Luke Ronchi, Jacob Oram, and James Foster on the coaching staff. The team will be without several key players, including Kane Williamson, who has withdrawn from the tour.
Williamson is currently playing for Middlesex on England’s county circuit. Fast bowler Lockie Ferguson has been rested as part of his workload management plan. Kyle Jamieson has opted out of the tour as he awaits the birth of his child, and Ben Sears is out with a side injury.
New Zealand’s campaign will begin on Wednesday against South Africa. The competition follows a double round-robin format, with each team playing each other twice, with the top two teams advancing to the final on July 26. All matches will be contested at Harare Sports Club.
