India put on a spirited performance in the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester last week, securing a draw and keeping the five-match series against England alive. Rishabh Pant’s brave half-century for India in the first innings will be remembered for a long time by the cricket community. However, he will miss the last Test due to a fractured foot, making it his final contribution to the ongoing tour.
Rishabh Pant sustained the injury on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, when he attempted to reverse sweep Chris Woakes and landed on his right foot.
At the time, the 27-year-old was hitting 37th. He had to go off the pitch. However, the Delhi player came out to bat the next day and scored a crucial half-century.
He couldn’t keep wickets, therefore Dhruv Jurel had to step in. However, Pant arrived at the stadium on crutches on Day 5 of the Test match, ready to bat if India required his services. KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, and Ravindra Jadeja all maintained their cool and provided Pant with some relief by allowing him to bat without agony.
“Rishabh Pant, who sustained a fracture to his right foot during the fourth Test against England in Manchester, has been ruled out of the fifth and final Test of the series,” the Board of Cricket in India (BCCI) announced.
“The BCCI Medical Team will continue to monitor his progress and the team wishes him a speedy recovery,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said in the release.
The BCCI also confirmed that Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper-batter N Jagadeesan will replace Pant in the fifth Test, which gets underway on Thursday, July 31.
“The Men’s Selection Committee has named Narayan Jagadeesan as replacement for Rishabh Pant for the fifth Test, which begins on July 31, 2025, at Kenningtan Oval in London.
India’s updated squad for the fifth Test: Shubman Gill (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Yadav, Anshul Kamboj, Arshdeep Singh, N Jagadeesan (WK).
