Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir praised Rishabh Pant’s brave batsmanship during the Manchester Test, despite suffering a fractured foot. Pant’s injury on Day 1 led him to leave the pitch in evident pain.
Surprisingly, the wicketkeeper-batsman returned to the crease on Day 2 and went on to reach his half-century, adding crucial runs to India’s total and laying the groundwork for a tenacious fightback. Gambhir described Pant’s performance as a watershed moment for the current Indian squad, emphasising the knock not only for its impact on the scoreboard, but also for the message it conveyed about character and determination. Gambhir remarked that it would significantly shape the team’s identity and mental toughness in the coming years.
Rishabh Pant has already been declared out of the series.
And one thing I’d want to add is that the character and foundation of this team will be based on what Rishabh has done for the team and the country,” Gambhir said in the post-match news conference.

Gambhir acknowledged that Pant’s decision to bat with a fractured foot was an extraordinary act, something not many players would attempt in similar circumstances.
“Any amount of praise is inadequate for him, especially because he is batting with a broken foot. Few people have done that in the past. He raised his hand, which is why I believe any amount of praise is appropriate. I could sit here and discuss this for hours. I believe subsequent generations will discuss this. And future generations should discuss the fact that someone batted with a fractured foot. And it’s unfortunate because of his current form,” Gambhir said.
Although Pant has been formally ruled out for the rest of the series, Gambhir voiced optimism for a quick recovery, emphasising the wicketkeeper-batsman’s critical importance in India’s red-ball system. He emphasised Pant’s value not only for his explosive batting but also for the overall balance he provides to the Test team.
“But, again, he’s a key member of the Test team. And I hope he heals quickly and returns to try and provide a game for us,” he said.
