Northern Superchargers have hired Ben Stokes as their mentor for the duration of The Hundred Men’s 2025. He is currently recovering from a left shoulder injury sustained during the just concluded England-India Test series.
Stokes’ absence from the 100-ball competition was confirmed before the tournament began in February. The main reason cited was limiting his workload ahead of the Ashes Down Under later this year.
The English red-ball captain would not have been able to play either way because he injured his shoulder during the red-ball series. The 34-year-old will join the Superchargers’ backroom staff, where former English all-rounder Andrew Flintoff serves as head coach of the side.
Stokes represented Northern Superchargers in the premier English tournaments of 2021 (two matches) and 2024 (three matches). The outstanding all-rounder may have played a few more matches in 2024, but a serious hamstring tear during one of them sidelined him for the full English summer last year, as well as vital Test series, when Ollie Pope commanded the side in his absence.
So far, the Superchargers have played only once and got their season off to a winning start by defeating Welsh Fire by eight wickets and 11 balls to spare at Headingley. Zak Crawley was adjudged with the Player of the Match accolade for the couple of catches he pouched in addition to his unbeaten 48-ball 67-run knock during the run-chase.
Ben Stokes’ all-round show helps England draw 2-2 over India
The recent Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy was quite a decent one for Stokes, both as captain and as an individual. He came to his team’s rescue with the bat on multiple occasions and bowled lengthy spells while supporting his pace-bowling unit on the field. All in all, Stokes ended up registering 304 runs in seven innings and 17 wickets in eight innings in the four matches he played. Stokes was rested for the final contest at The Oval, which England eventually lost by six runs.
