Dane van Niekerk, a South African all-rounder, has been selected by the Guyana Amazon Warriors for the Women’s Caribbean Premier League 2025. Van Niekerk, New Zealand medium-pacer Molly Penfold, and Ireland wicketkeeper-bat Amy Hunter have been named replacements for Shabnim Ismail, Lauren Winfield-Hill, and Madeline Penna, respectively.
This will be van Niekerk’s first appearance in a franchise league since August 2023, when she competed in the Women’s Hundred.
She also participated in the Women’s Premier League’s inaugural season in 2023, when she was signed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru but did not play a single game before being released ahead of the 2024 season. This will be her first time in the WCPL.
Van Niekerk recently reversed her international retirement after returning to provincial cricket. She participated in a training camp with the South African national side but will not play in the forthcoming ODI World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, which begins on September 30. She declared her international retirement after being left out of South Africa’s selection for the 2023 home T20 World Cup due to a lack of fitness.
However, South Africa’s head coach, Mandla Mashimbyi, has stated that she is being considered for future series.
Van Niekerk represented Western Province in the 2024-25 domestic season, finishing fourth on the list of best run-scorers in the CSA Women Pro20 Series with a century and fifty.
Warriors will face Trinbago Knight Riders in Providence on Saturday to kick off the WCPL 2025.
