Daren Sammy, West Indian head coach, has urged his quicks to do well against India in the next red-ball series. The West Indies have announced a 15-man roster for the two-match Test series, which will begin on October 2.
Roston Chase will lead the group, with Jomel Warrican as his deputy. Khary Pierre, a left-arm spinner, is a major addition to the bowling roster. Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze are also back in the mix.
Meanwhile, Daren Sammy shed light on each pacer’s particular talent in Test cricket and expressed confidence that they would put India to the test.
Sammy also emphasised the importance of taking 20 wickets in Test matches played in India, stating that his bowling team is capable of delivering breakthroughs and will be able to do so against the hosts.
“In our fast-bowling department, we’ve got four different guys who have their own variety. You have Shamar Joseph, who’s very skiddy, Jayden, who has a strong front leg and can swing the ball both ways, then you have Alzarri Joseph with his height and the bounce he could extract. So, again, we take confidence in that, especially the way they’ve been bowling over the last year,” Sammy was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
“The ability to take 20 wickets, because that’s what you will need in India. If you can’t take 20 wickets in India, you are on the backfoot, and we have a bowling lineup (capable) of that, especially from the seam department, that could take 20 wickets. I have full confidence in that, and it makes me smile knowing that we go out bowling and we take 20 wickets. And that’s the first objective in the Test match,” he added.
West Indies last played a Test series in June and July earlier this year, when they were clean swept by Australia at home by a 0-3 margin. The team management will expect the squad to put up a better fight against Indians in Ahmedabad (first Test) and Delhi (second Test).
