‘I spoke to selectors and captain’ – Ravindra Jadeja unsure of his ODI snub amid 2027 World Cup dream

“I want to play the 2027 World Cup. Jadeja said the news conference following Day 2 play that winning an ODI World Cup is every cricketer's dream.

'I spoke to selectors and captain' - Ravindra Jadeja unsure of his ODI snub amid 2027 World Cup dream

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are not the only senior players in focus for the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup. Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has also expressed his willingness to be a part of the 50-over squad and help the Indian team lift the World Cup trophy in Africa. Notably, Jadeja was recently dropped from the ODI squad ahead of the tour of Australia.

On being asked about his views on his non-selection at the press conference on the second day of the ongoing Test match against the West Indies, Jadeja said that like any other cricketer, he also dreams to win an ODI World Cup before calling a time on his career.

Upon being dropped, Ravindra Jadeja spoke to chief selector and captain Shubman Gill, and got a response on why he was not considered for the Australia series.

“See, this is not in my hands. I mean, I want to play the World Cup, of course, but at the end of the day, there’s some thinking from the team management, selectors, coach, and captain — why they didn’t keep me in this series. There must be some reason behind it,” Jadeja told reporters at the press conference after the end of the second day’s play.

“And they spoke to me — it’s not like I got a surprise when the team was announced that I’m not there. So that’s a good thing, that the captain, selector, and coach spoke to me about what they were thinking and the reason behind it. So I’m happy about that,” Jadeja added.

The 36-year-old senior cricketer also mentioned that the snub from the Australia series does not mean the end of the road for him, as there are many opportunities that will come his way before the 2027 World Cup. He aims to keep doing whatever he has done the best in all the years of his international career, and fulfill his dream of lifting the prestigious trophy.

“Whenever the next opportunity comes, obviously, I’ll try to do what I’ve been doing all these years. And like you said about the major tournament — the World Cup — if I get a chance there, before that there are quite a few ODIs. If I do well in those and get the opportunity, obviously it’ll be good for Indian cricket. And yes, winning the World Cup is everyone’s dream. Last time in the 50-over World Cup, we fell short by a little, so this time, if possible, we’ll try to finish what was left incomplete,” the cricketer concluded.

For the unversed, Shubman Gill has replaced the veteran Rohit Sharma as the new captain in ODIs, as the selection committee led by Agarkar has visions to build a team keeping the future in mind. Rohit and Virat managed to retain their places in the squad, however, Jadeja, who hit the winning runs in India’s last ODI match, was nowhere to be seen in the 15-man line-up for the series beginning October 19 in Perth.

The three-match series will commence with the first ODI, while the second and third match of the series will be played in Adelaide and Sydney on October 23 and October 25, respectively. The Shubman Gill-led side features Shreyas Iyer as the vice-captain, whereas KL Rahul is the specialist wicketkeeper-batter in the roster. Apart from Jadeja, all-rounder Hardik Pandya is also missing from the list due to an injury.

India ODI squad for Australia tour: Shubman Gill (captain), Shreyas Iyer (vice-captain), Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Axar Patel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav
