The 91st edition of India famous Ranji Trophy began on October 15 with 32 teams.
The competition will feature around 138 matches separated into two groups, running until November 19 before transitioning to the white-ball events, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy, before returning in January for the knockout stages.
Mumbai, the 42-time winners, begin the season with new skipper Shardul Thakur replacing Ajinkya Rahane, who continues to play in the hopes of making a red-ball comeback. Vidarbha, the defending champions, come into the game with plenty of enthusiasm after winning both the Ranji and Irani Cup previous season. This is also the first Ranji season in two decades without Cheteshwar Pujara, who announced his retirement earlier this year.
Ishan Kishan returns to lead Jharkhand, and Rajat Patidar captained Madhya Pradesh in all forms. Abhimanyu Easwaran will attempt to dominate for Bengal, while Sarfaraz Khan seeks to rebound from an injury-plagued season. The most promising bowlers are Vidarbha’s Harsh Dubey, who took 69 wickets previous season, and Kerala pacer Eden Apple Tom. This season has also seen significant transfers, with Prithvi Shaw joining Maharashtra and pairing up with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Jalaj Saxena, while Hanuma Vihari moves to Tripura.
