During the rain-shortened first ODI against Australia in Perth on Sunday, October 19, Indian openers Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma took a break. The Australian pace attack had dismissed both batters cheaply before the game was paused, putting India on the back foot early on.
The action was halted for more than 30 minutes owing to rain, marking the second interruption in the first ODI. During the break, Rohit and Gill were seen eating popcorn and looking out over the Perth ground from the glass pavilion, relishing lighthearted moments amongst the high-pressure situation. Their fun interlude provided a small relief from the game’s intensity and allowed them to refocus.

At the time of the interruption, India had reached 37/3 in 11.5 overs, with Shreyas Iyer (6)* and Axar Patel (7)* at the wicket. Josh Hazlewood had dismissed Rohit Sharma for 8 runs after edging a delivery to second slip, where Matt Renshaw made a fine catch.
Shortly later, Mitchell Starc removed Virat Kohli for a duck, his first on Australian soil in 30 ODIs. Cooper Connolly caught him at backward point as he attempted a powerful cover drive. Soon after, Nathan Ellis dismissed Indian skipper Shubman Gill with the first delivery, the inside edge carrying to wicketkeeper Josh Philippe.
With India reeling at 37/3, all eyes turned to Iyer and Axar, who will need to spend time at the crease to stabilise the innings and bring the team back into contention. Meanwhile, the Australian bowling attack will look to exploit the damp conditions, using the moisture on the pitch to generate extra movement and dismiss the remaining Indian batters cheaply.
