Yashasvi Jaiswal, a star batter, has been in excellent form recently in white-ball cricket. Following his maiden One-Day International century against South Africa, Jaiswal has now recorded his first T20 century for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Batting in a run-chase against Haryana, Mumbai were able to overcome the massive 235-run goal thanks to Jaiswal’s brilliant performance.
The loss comes at a time when the batter has been overlooked for the opener position in India’s T20I squad, while Shubman Gill has struggled to get going. As a result, the left-handed batter’s dazzling century has prompted selectors to consider him as a potential replacement.
The match began with Haryana scoring 234-3 at the conclusion of 20 overs, thanks to a stunning 110-run stand between skipper Ankit Kumar (89 off 42) and Nishant Sandhu (63* off 38) at the DY Patil Academy in Ambi. Sairaj Patil was Mumbai’s only successful bowler, with 2-44 in four overs, as Shardul Thakur and his teammates appeared mostly bewildered in the first innings.
However, Yashasvi Jaiswal and veteran opener Ajinkya Rahane arrived determinedly at the crease and started well.
The 50-run partnership was quickly broken, but Rahane was soon dismissed by Ishant Bharadwaj for a good 21 off 10 balls. That did not shake the Bhadohi-born’s confidence, as the kid continued to push the bounds of fun, joined by Sarfaraz Khan.
Sarfaraz played the ideal second violin as boundaries began to pour from both ends. However, the No. 3 batter left after a strong 64 off 25 pitches. Jaiswal, unconcerned, weathered the storm to score a superb century on his 48th delivery. The attacking batter was out a few balls later, but the win remained a formality for the Mumbaikars.
Sairaj (8* off 3) and Atharva Ankolekar (10* off 2) put finishing touches as the Shardul Thakur-led team cruised to a four-wicket victory with 15 balls remaining. Jaiswal, unsurprisingly, was awarded Player of the Match.
