Rohit Sharma, a former Indian captain, has been appointed to Mumbai’s squad for the first two matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The Mumbai team will be led by all-rounder Shardul Thakur, with noteworthy players like Sarfaraz Khan, Musheer Khan, and Angrish Raghuvanshi. However, experienced campaigners Ajinkya Rahane, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Ayush Mhatre have been excluded from the squad.
Earlier reports claimed Rohit Sharma might miss the first two games of the tournament,
but he later confirmed his availability. His inclusion is consistent with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the selection committee’s directive, which states that all centrally contracted players must compete in at least two rounds of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Following his domestic duties, Rohit is anticipated to rejoin the national team for the forthcoming ODI series against New Zealand, which starts on January 11. His involvement in the VHT is viewed as an important step towards maintaining match fitness ahead of international assignments.
“Rohit will be available for the first two games. Jaiswal, Dube and even Rahane will not be a part of the Mumbai squad for at least first two matches as the selection panel is going ahead with a young squad,” said a MCA source as quoted by Times Now.
The squad also features several fresh faces, including Chinmay Sutar, who represented India Emerging in four List A matches in 2019, fellow batter Ishan Mulchandani, and pacer Onkar Tarmale, who was recently picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the IPL 2026 mini-auction.
Among the other familiar names are wicketkeeper-batters Siddhesh Lad and Hardik Tamore, along with spin all-rounders Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian. Mumbai have been placed in Group C of the tournament and will begin their Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign against Sikkim on December 24, before facing Uttarakhand in their next fixture.
