Nathan Lyon injured himself while attempting to chase the ball in the deep and was forced to leave the pitch during the first session of Day 5 of the third Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday, December 21. Later, it was determined that he had hurt his hamstring.
Nathan Lyon was ruled out for the remainder of the Test match.
This made things difficult for Australia, as England put up a strong fight in the fourth innings, chasing an impossible total of 435 for win. Lyon had already made an impact prior to his injury, dismissing Zak Crawley, Harry Brook, and England captain Ben Stokes on the penultimate day of the Test.
Cummins was forced to rely on his part-timers, Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne, more than he would have liked. Will Jacks formed partnerships of 91 and 52 runs with Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse, respectively, to offer the Three Lions hope of a historic victory. However, the tourists were eventually knocked out for 352, losing the match by 82 runs.
Lyon finished the match with 5/147 from 53 overs. The fourth Test, which begins on Boxing Day at the legendary Melbourne Cricket Ground, has a very short turnaround time. The experienced off-spinner may be rested for the battle and return for the final Test in Sydney.
Lyon did not play the second Test in Brisbane, as Australia used an additional pacer in Michael Neser for the pink-ball match. The 38-year-old spinner was dissatisfied with this choice and stated his displeasure openly.
Meanwhile, with the win in Adelaide, Australia won the series and hence retained the prestigious Ashes urn. They have an unassailable 3-0 lead, with two games left to be played. Another Ashes whitewash Down Under looms for England. They need to pull off something special to taste success on what has been a forgettable tour so far.
