Devdutt Padikkal’s stunning century led Karnataka to a record run chase against Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy champions Jharkhand on the first day of the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Ahmedabad.
On Wednesday, December 24, Karnataka chased down a breathtaking target of 413 against Jharkhand at the Narendra Modi Stadium B Ground, creating history.
After winning the toss and deciding to field first against a powerful Jharkhand batting lineup, Vidyadhar Patil got Karnataka off to a good start, dismissing Utkarsh Singh in the fourth over. Shikhar Mohan and Shubh Sharma fought to raise the stakes before Virat Singh and Kumar Kushagra banded together to alter the trend in Jharkhand’s advantage.
Both scored scintillating half-centuries, but Ishan Kishan stole the show with 125 off just 39 balls. The Jharkhand captain blasted seven fours and 14 sixes in his frenetic innings. Jharkhand ultimately finished with 412/9 after 50 overs.
Karnataka skipper Mayank Agarwal and Devdutt Padikkal put on 114 runs in 12 overs before being removed for 54 off 34 balls.
Karun Nair, Smaran Ravichandran, and Krishnan Shrijith struggled to convert their early starts into high scores, but they provided valuable support to Padikkal.
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batsman hit 147 off just 118 balls, including ten fours and seven sixes. After being dismissed in the 41st over, Abhinav Manohar and Dhruv Prabhakar delivered sensational cameos to propel the side to victory. Karnataka won by five wickets and 15 balls to spare.
This proved to be the second-most successful chase in List A history. The highest score remains South Africa’s titanic performance against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006, when they chased down a 435-run target.
