Regarding star batsman Virat Kohli‘s abrupt Test retirement, former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary spoke out, saying the contemporary great was mistreated by the team’s administration and had to leave to preserve his honour and dignity. Just before India’s Test tour of England, Tiwary made remarks months after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli abruptly declared their retirements from the longest format.
According to Tiwary, Kohli was driven out of Test cricket by a failing team environment rather than having any intention of leaving. He emphasised that players who have dedicated their lives to serving Indian cricket are compelled to leave when they feel insulted, not because they choose to.
“Those who are passionate, who have done so much with honesty for this team, if they get ill-treated like this, then they will keep their integrity and self-respect and leave the team themselves,” Tiwary stated to SportsTak.

The former also discussed Kohli’s record as a Test captain, noting that, in terms of winning percentage, he continues to be India’s most successful leader in the format. He emphasised Rohit Sharma’s accomplishments, which included winning two ICC trophies for India. Tiwary, on the other hand, believes that Kohli’s leadership and athletic skills cannot be understated and described how Kohli helped India become a formidable overseas Test squad.
“Rohit has won the ICC Trophy and is undoubtedly a superior captain. Prior to that, though, Virat Kohli made significant contributions to this team throughout his time [as captain]. As captain, he has accomplished a great deal for the team. Virat Kohli currently has the best winning percentage in test cricket. Rohit Sharma went on to become India’s player-captain and win the Champions Trophy. And the team’s camaraderie is clear from the way they interact with the players,” Tiwari continued.
Despite leaving the game’s longest format, Kohli’s ODI performances are still outstanding. He hit 93 off 91 balls to lead India to a successful pursuit of 300 in the opening match of the current New Zealand ODI series. For the eleventh time in his career, he was able to overtake Rohit and retake the top spot in the ICC men’s ODI batting rankings thanks to that knock.
Kohli has scored 74*, 135, 102, 65*, and now 93 in his recent outstanding ODI form. Rohit, meanwhile, dropped to third place in the rankings despite having a respectable performance with 26 in the same game. With the last encounter scheduled for Sunday in Indore, the three-match ODI series versus New Zealand is currently tied at one.
