‘He did not contribute as per the expectations’ – Gujarat Titans’ coach shares blunt views on Shubman Gill’s omission from T20 World Cup team

Shubman Gill was noticeably absent when the BCCI released India’s lineup for the 2018 T20 World Cup. Gill was formerly India’s shortest format vice-captain. However, after a spate of lacklustre performances, he was forced to make way for the in-form Ishan Kishan.

Gujarat Titans head coach Parthiv Patel stated that Gill was supported by the selectors and team management in T20Is since they wanted a competent player who could serve as captain in all forms. The Punjab batsman already leads India in Tests and One-Day Internationals.

However, the former India wicketkeeper stated that despite numerous opportunities, Shubman Gill did not perform as expected.

“India was hoping to find a solid player who could captain in all three formats. He was given a fair chance. Maybe he did not contribute as per the expectations. There are still five games left in the New Zealand series. I think the decision was taken in the South Africa series itself. The talent pool is so much right now so there will always be talk about who is not there in the squad. Instead, I feel we should empower those who are there and put some positive energy behind them. It is a very strong squad and India will definitely start as favorites,” he said on Jay Thadeshwar’s podcast.

Patel, who follows domestic cricket very closely, said he has been impressed with the number of talented players in the country. He backed the Men in Blue to dominate world cricket in the years to come and win many ICC titles along the way.
