Since last year, Virat Kohli has been playing ODI cricket in incredible form. The former captain of India was confident going into the ODI matches against New Zealand after winning Player of the Series against South Africa. He amassed 240 runs at an average of 80 and a strike rate of 105.26 in three games.
In the third ODI at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, he scored one of his best hundreds in the format. Simon Doull, a former pacer from New Zealand, feels that Kohli is still the most fit member of the Indian team despite his age of 37. Ultimately, Doull supported the Delhi batsman to be involved in international cricket, at least until he is 45.
The cricketer-turned-commentator was particularly impressed by Kohli’s ability to run hard between the wickets and his will to win games for his team.
“A few of the images were just clear and sharp. Beyond that, it’s his running between the wickets and field movement. He still exudes a sense of youth. He would likely still be the fittest man on that side despite his advanced age and experience. Doull told JioHotstar, “That’s professionalism.”
“The determination to keep trying to win games, to pull your team back into the game when they are far behind, and to run as hard as he does, both for his own runs and for his teammates.” The way he’s playing right now is just adorable. I hope he continues playing international cricket till he is 44 or 45 years old,” he continued.
In the third ODI on Sunday, Kohli reached 54 ODI hundreds, five more than the great Sachin Tendulkar. He also surpassed the record of 12,662 runs set by the great Ricky Ponting to become the most prolific No. 3 batsman in ODI cricket. Now, Kohli will take an extended vacation before playing cricket for his country again. He will miss the World Cup, which starts next month, because he has retired from Twenty20 Internationals. He will, however, return to action during the Indian Premier League (IPL) while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the reigning champions.
