Nathan Ellis, the captain of the Hobart Hurricanes, has been ruled out of the team’s crucial match against the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL) Knockout. Ellis was hurt during the Hurricanes’ game against the Brisbane Heat, but the specifics of the injury were not made public.
His availability for the rest of the finals series will be evaluated over the next few days, the franchise noted. If the Hobart Hurricanes lose to the Melbourne Stars on Wednesday, January 21, their BBL campaign may be over. But with rain predicted, a win—or even a washout—would advance them to the Challenger on Friday, January 23, where they would play the Sydney Sixers or the Perth Scorchers.
Ellis has taken 14 wickets at an average of 21.28 and an economy rate of 9.03 this season, making him the Hurricanes’ top wicket-taker.
He has performed well during the powerplay, power surge, and death overs, which are all pivotal parts of the innings. Ben McDermott will assume the captaincy in his place.
Ellis and Glenn Maxwell will be rested for the three-match T20I series against Pakistan, which is a prelude to the World Cup next month, according to an announcement made by Australia’s selectors on Monday, January 19. Ellis has grown to be an important part of Australia’s T20 attack, and George Bailey, the chair of selectors, was later questioned about any potential injuries involving the two.
“I hope not. They have a busy schedule. One of them, hopefully, will play two or three games in four or five days. The tournament’s back half is quite busy. According to Bailey, who was cited by ESPNcricinfo, “I think like almost every tournament that we head to, especially when it’s a really busy time of the year as this one is, it’s very much working with individuals around making sure that they get the… best preparation they can to make sure that when they do join that World Cup squad, they’re ready to perform.”
Rehan Ahmed, who left for England duty in Sri Lanka, will also not be playing for the Hobart Hurricanes. After suffering a hamstring injury on Boxing Day, Tim David is still out.
