In the 12th game of the Indian Premier League 2023, the Chennai Super Kings are comfortably dominating the Mumbai Indians (IPL). When Chennai chose to bowl first at Mumbai’s renowned Wankhede Stadium, they were able to hold Mumbai to just 157/8. Meanwhile, as Mumbai Indians spinner Jason Behrendorff attempted to even the score, Chennai lost opener Devon Conway for a duck in the fourth delivery of the second inning.
Ajinkya Rahane, a CSK rookie, however, shocked everyone by blasting a 19-ball fifty while batting at No. 3. He made six runs off of his first six pitches before shocking everyone with an explosive fourth over.
Off Arshad Khan’s over, he hit six and four straight fours, and he appeared poised for a big hit. The seasoned hitter reached his first half-century for the Chennai Super Kings in the sixth over after smashing two consecutive fours and a stunning six against Cameron Green.
Ajinkya Rahane’s 19-ball fifty is currently tied for the Chennai Super Kings’ second-fastest fifty. Suresh Raina, a former legendary player, currently holds the record for CSK thanks to his 16-ball fifty against the Punjab Kings in the 2014 IPL.
Injuries to Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali provided Rahane with a window of opportunity that he was denied in the first two games. In the IPL, he has over 4000 runs, two hundreds, and 29 half-centuries. But because of his well-known traditional approach across forms, he has been off course for the past few seasons.
Yet by registering his fastest IPL fifty, he disproved his detractors. With Ruturaj Gaikwad at the crease, Chennai needed just 90 runs to win the final 14 overs after scoring 68/1 in the powerplay overs, fending off early pressure despite pursuing a challenging goal.
In the first inning, Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner excelled with the ball to hold Mumbai to just 157/8. Another CSK debutant, Sisanda Magala, recorded 1/37, while Tushar Deshpande also claimed two significant wickets.
