The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly decided to stop hiring support staff on an as-needed basis. This has led to the Indian women’s cricket team getting long-term contracts. The BCCI constitution says that the Cricket Advisory Committee will choose the team’s head coach, while the selectors will choose the rest of the staff.
In the past, the women’s team support staff, which includes the batting, fielding, and bowling coaches, did not follow this rule. In particular, the BCCI hires coaches from the National Cricket Academy on a temporary basis (NCA).
A recent report said that the coaches would get long-term contracts instead of short-term ones like in the past. According to the report, this will be good for the team because it will give them stability.
“All of the coaches will have long-term contracts, not short-term ones like we’ve seen in the past.” This will give the team the stability it needs,” a BCCI source told The Indian Express, as quoted in the paper.
The report says that the decision was made at a meeting of the virtual Apex Council on Sunday, April 9. After firing Ramesh Powar in December of last year, the India women’s cricket team was still without a head coach. In February 2023, they took part in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup without a head coach.
The senior women’s cricket team has never won a world championship. To get ready for the next ICC competition, the first step will be to improve the coaching process.
During the meeting, both international and domestic media rights for the home season from 2023 to 2027 were also talked about. But there has been no official decision about this yet.
The BCCI would have had high hopes for the media rights for the 2023–2027 season, given that the Indian Premier League brought in Rs 48,390 crore (IPL).
With the addition of Viacom to the Indian cricket business, broadcasters like Star and Sony will have to compete with each other on three fronts.
