As the Indian Premier League 2023 has begun, the T20 craze has gripped the entire nation. In recent years, the advent of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has coincided with an increase in betting and gambling, as numerous apps and websites offer fans the opportunity to wager on teams or individuals and win substantial prizes. Many well-known personalities are also seen promoting these platforms, which have millions of users nationwide. Governor RN Ravi of Tamil Nadu recently authorized a bill to prohibit online gambling, including online rummy and poker, in the state.
During a recent promotional event for cricket apps in Chennai, the renowned Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who originates from the state, was questioned about his views on the ban. The Indian cricketer lost his temper and demanded to know why the media wanted to create a controversy. R Ashwin, in response to the query, inquired, “Do you want the truth or a headline?”
“It is inappropriate for the time and place. I’m here to discuss something, but you’re attempting to stir up controversy. It is unfair, as R Ashwin was quoted by India Today as saying.
R Ashwin was then questioned about the relationship between online gambling and cricket, to which he replied, “Who invented mobile phones?” and “Smartphones are the reason children don’t play cricket anymore.”
He suggested that parents remove children’s mobile phones to encourage them to play outside more often. He added that he would support any initiative to encourage youth to play cricket.
Rajasthan Royals will play Chennai Super Kings in the fourth matchup
Currently, Ashwin is playing for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. Rajasthan, who finished second in the previous season, are off to a strong start in the current campaign, having won two of their first three encounters.
So far this season, the right-handed off-spinner has taken four wickets at an average of 19.25 and an economy rate of 6. Match 17 of the tournament will be played between Rajasthan and Chennai Super Kings on April 12 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
