The animosity between renowned cricketer Virat Kohli and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly does not appear to be abating, as both parties have expressed their dislike for one another quite overtly. A few days after Kohli unfollowed Sourav Ganguly on Instagram, the former India captain reciprocated to demonstrate his displeasure.
During the Royal Challengers Bangalore vs. Delhi Capitals match in the Indian Premier League 2023 on April 15 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, it was evident that the two teams do not get along. During the match, Kohli was observed giving Ganguly, the Director of Cricket at DC, the death gaze.
After the game, Sourav Ganguly and Kohli were seen avoiding each other and did not even clasp hands, resulting in several viral moments. Ganguly and Kohli’s current frosty relationship has its roots in 2021, when the former served as president of the BCCI.
In the lead-up to the T20 World Cup 2021, Kohli resigned as T20I captain following numerous media rumors regarding a change in the Indian captaincy. In his statement, the star cricketer made it plain that he will continue to lead India in ODIs and Tests.
However, much to everyone’s astonishment, the BCCI appointed Rohit Sharma as the captain of the ODI team prior to the South Africa tour, with no statement from Kohli. According to reports, BCCI did not want split captaincy for both limited-over formats, and Ganguly alleged in an interview that he asked Kohli not to resign as T20I captain.
No one from BCCI contacted Kohli prior to his dismissal as ODI captain, according to Kohli. During a press conference, Kohli denied Ganguly’s claims and stated that no one had asked him to remain in his position. The star batsman reportedly resigned from his Test captaincy a month later to make his displeasure known to the board and the entire globe.
The dispute occurred during a time when Kohli was struggling to collect runs in all formats. Since the Asia Cup 2022, however, the star batsman has made a remarkable comeback and ended his century-long drought across all formats.
