Undoubtedly, the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 has been one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year. The tournament is scheduled to take place in India in the latter half of 2023. South Africa, having recently qualified directly for the World Cup, would transfer its attention to assembling the strongest possible squad to travel to India and compete for the coveted title.
Following the veteran batsman’s remarkable form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, many have suggested that Faf du Plessis should return to the team.
Rob Walter, coach of the Proteas, opined that it is highly unlikely that du Plessis will play for South Africa in the World Cup. However, he did not completely rule out the possibility.
“For 50-over cricket, there is a slight possibility, but not a great one, that Faf would participate. A few physical concerns must be addressed before he can continue playing T20 cricket, which is his primary source of income. It seems implausible to me.” Walter reported to IOL Sports.
Walter continued by praising du Plessis for his recent IPL exploits and opining that it would be naïve not to believe that du Plessis would strengthen the South African squad. Du Plessis has accrued 576 runs in 11 IPL 2023 matches, making him the league’s leading run scorer.
“It would be naïve to believe that a player like Faf would not improve the team. Obviously, he would strengthen the team; he has proven himself to be one of the world’s greatest players. As stated, however, this is unlikely to occur. We are looking at a man who has led his country and possesses high moral standards. Walter stated, “I’m not overly concerned about his reintegration into the team.”
